Ridgefield is situated just 400 metres from the heart of the historic Derbyshire market town of Bakewell, centrally placed for exploring the Peak District National Park. Bakewell is centred around the River Wye, which flows through the centre of the town, passing beneath the medieval bridge. The town was established by the Saxons and the church and churchyard contains numerous Saxon relics. Bakewell is an ancient market town and has a weekly agricultural market every Monday. For those with a sense of history there are numerous magnificent historic houses all within a few miles. These include Chatsworth House (shown top opposite - approximately 10 minutes away by car), Haddon Hall (shown second down opposite - 5 minutes away by car), Eyam Hall, Hardwick Hall and Lyme Hall - all of which offer excellent days out. The historic town of Buxton lies within easy reach. A wide range of cultural events are available at Buxton Opera House, which in summer hosts an annual music and opera festival and a Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. Bakewell is the perfect base from which to explore the old market town of Tideswell (6 miles), with its magnificent church - known as 'The Cathedral of the Peak' - the historical village of Castleton (10 miles), with its castle and Blue John Caverns, and the Plague village of Eyam (6 miles). Hathersage, the site of Little John's grave is just 10 miles away. The local scenery is magnificent. Just a short drive away there is the Derwent valley, with a magnificent series of dams and reservoirs, including Ladybower. The gritstone scenery of Edale Valley and Stanage Edge are unparalleled in this country, while the limestone dales such as nearby Monsal Dale (opposite above) Lathkill Dale (opposite below) are among the country's finest. Within a short drive are famous walking centres such as Dovedale, Hope Valley and Edale. Rock climbing is a popular sport in the Peak District and can be found on nearby gritstone edges and limestone crags. There are numerous opportunities locally for fishing, hang-gliding, golfing, horse riding, cycling and mountain biking. |
